This is a city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again
-Alexander McCall Smith
It’s been a bit quiet here on the Selkie in past weeks. I apologize! I’ve been preparing for The Trip. Next week, I’ll be back in Scotland. It’s a bit of a business trip….an opportunity to attend a veterinary meeting. But I have a hard time considering time spent in Scotland as business. I was chatting with a old friend who lived over there for a time, and asked if he had any “off the beaten track” suggestions for my time in Edinburgh. This will be my fourth time in the city in just over a year, and I am beginning to explore beyond the confines of my Lonely Planet guide. “For me, Edinburgh is always about meeting with friends”, he said. How very true that is. I am so looking forward to seeing the friends I made on past trips, and the ones I have not yet met. Edinburgh is a city of Queens and poets, history and intellect. And yet, it opens its arms to sons and strangers alike…invites them in for a pint and a chin wag, and makes them feel that (as the sign at the airport says)…”this is home”.
And so, until I have some current shots, here are a few photos from past trips of the city that will break your heart again and again…
